newleaf, a new learning programme targeting young adults in Plymouth who are currently out of work and not in education or training has proved an outstanding success.
Developed by Connexions Devon and Cornwall Ltd and funded by the Learning and Skills Council through the European Social Fund (ESF), it offers bespoke learning packages aimed at young people who have proved hard to engage and motivate or who come from vulnerable groups, whilst taking into consideration the employment opportunities available locally.
“We’re very pleased with how newleaf is progressing,” said Oliver Marner, Connexions Project Team Leader.
“All those who took part in the provision are now highly motivated and want to engage in further learning or employment.”
The first newleaf course - a Community Sports Leader Award - was delivered to a group of 11 young people by the YMCA. The flexibility of ESF funding allowed Connexions to design the course to satisfy the needs of each individual on the course whilst maintaining the group learning benefits of team support and motivation.
“newleaf is making a real difference to the lives of young people and is also making an impact on the local economy,” said Mark Williams, ESF Director for the LSC South West. “By improving skill levels, building confidence and giving learners a renewed sense of direction, it is making a significant contribution to the Plymouth community and I congratulate everyone involved.”
