Celebrating ESF Achievements in Yorkshire and the Humber
Some of the outstanding achievements of ESF participants from Yorkshire and the Humber were recognised at the ESF Celebration of Achievement Awards event in Leeds recently.
The awards ceremony was organised by the Learning and Skills Council and Jobcentre Plus. There were seven award categories for people who have made the most significant achievements in their learning journeys and outcomes. Most have found employment or progressed to further learning. Many had overcome considerable barriers along the way.
The winner of the Outstanding Achiever Award was Lisa Gilfoyle (pictured right with Kevin Bennett from the Government Office for Yorkshire and The Humber) – a lone parent and mother of four. Lisa overcame many difficulties to gain qualifications and employment through the Positive Life Changes project in Bradford. Lisa also received the award in the lone parents category.
“The Positive Life Changes course completely changed my life,” said Lisa. “I feel much better about myself now and am able to better provide for my children too.”
Other awards presented included the Achievers Awards for young adults who have succeeded in work or training, the Determination Awards for 25–49 year-olds who have overcome personal difficulties and the Second Chance Awards for achieving personal goals in the face of adversity.
Margaret Coleman, Regional Director for the LSC in Yorkshire and the Humber said: “The event recognised the achievements of individuals and training providers, and celebrated how ESF changes lives by giving people better skills, better jobs and better lives.”
Case Study – Daniel Smith, Determination Award
Daniel Smith (pictured with Ken Lambert from European Social Fund Division) who is hearing impaired, wanted a career in LGV driving. Daniel’s Jobcentre Plus adviser referred him to the ESF Driving Transport Employment project run by North East Lincolnshire Council’s Employment Development Services.
Using a pen pointing technique devised by his instructor Daniel passed his Large Goods Vehicle (LGV) tests at first attempt. He now works for a local transport company.
“Now I can have the career I always wanted,” said Daniel. “Driving Transport Employment really supported me.”
