With sites in Huddersfield and Batley, Direct Training have been providing foundation for work training across Calderdale and Kirklees since 1989.
The 'BOOST' programme, run by Direct Training, is funded by Jobcentre Plus, under Measure 1.1. It provides a package of advice, guidance and support aimed at people who have been unemployed or jobless for less than 6 months.
It allows them access to the facilities of the Jobsearch Support Centre, enabling them to undertake training modules in job search techniques to achieve an individual plan of action for constructive focused job search activity.
The programme has been running since April 2004 and is due to run until the end of the year. The programme has helped 898 people with job search advice, with 45% (against a target of 47%) of those people moving into work.

Gary's Story
Gary attended BOOST following an accident at work, where he suffered severe injuries and was unable to work for two years. Although this was a difficult time, Gary remained very positive and staff provided some useful tips for Gary, suggesting that he should point out his good work record prior to his accident in his covering letters and that he had exceeded the specialist's forecast of his recovery through his own determination.
Gary also followed his agreed Action Plan in terms of attendance and setting himself job search targets. Interviews soon followed and Gary was offered a position as Trainee Printer at Calf Hey Design Ltd.
Saira's Story
When Saira started with the Boost programme, she had no previous experience of working with children, except from a placement at a local school, which formed part of her qualification in childcare from Huddersfield Technical College. She therefore had to convince an employer that she was worth taking on.
Saira is quiet and a traditional Muslim, but from her one-to-one initial interview, she pointed out how much she loves working with children and would like nothing better than to find work in this area. Her sincerity was obvious, but she needed help with her job search. Staff prepared a speculative letter and CV.
Saira selected some nurseries that provided easy access for her. The Hunnypot Nursery invited her for and interview and offered he a position as a Nursery Nurse. Saira was well pleased.
Helen & Barbara's Story
Helen was attending the Boost Programme and mentioned that her mother was unemployed, but was reluctant to attend. Helen kept at it and managed to persuade her Mum to join in.
Barbara was very nervous at first and embarrassed about her poor spelling. After the trainers convinced her that being a good speller was not a pre-requisite for the production work she wanted, Barbara soon settled into being an enthusiastic job seeker.
She also worried that her age might be against her but employers and agencies were impressed with her employment record and positive attitude. After 3 weeks attendance, both mother and daughter found work together.
