ESF 14 - 16 Alternative Education Project

[Measure 2.2]

Case Study August 2006 – Joe Newman

Joe Newman is 16 years old. Joe joined the ESF 14-16 Alternative Education Project at Chelmsford College in September 2004 having left Kingsmead School, Harold Hill, in January 2004. Although not permanently excluded from school a mutual decision between Joe, his parents, and the school was made and all parties agreed that being in a classroom and traditional teaching methods did not suit Joe’s style of learning. It was agreed that Joe would achieve more if taken out of the classroom and undertook learning in a more practical environment. The school was aware of the Alternative Education programme at Chelmsford College and agreed that this would be the best route for him to take.

When Joe first joined the 14-16 programme he was 14 and had been out of the school system for 9 months. He had not had a good experience of school and was therefore apprehensive, lacking in confidence, and had missed out on a vital part of his schooling. However, he showed commitment and a positive attitude from the outset and soon became an integral part of the class.

Joe joined the programme with the intention of gaining some qualifications to enable him to enter further education, so he undertook the following qualifications which he was to complete:

In addition to these qualifications, Joe also undertook a major role in organising a 5-a-side charity-football event in aid of Children in Need.

Joe’s career ambition is to become a motor mechanic, so he also undertook work experience at Denham Motors in Basildon on a Monday and Tuesday throughout the duration of the course. He received glowing reports from his placement.

He achieved all his qualification aims and has accepted a place on the Body Repair Level 2 course at Thurrock and Basildon College.

As well as gaining his qualifications Joe has gained confidence, self respect, and organisational skills. He has proven to be a good team player, an effective communicator and has a good sense of responsibility. His attendance rate was an amazing 100%!

Joe was nominated by his tutors in July 2006 for the Student memorial prize for his efforts and achievements over the duration of the course. This prize is the highest accolade in the Alternative Education programme.
